New Law Will Require Camera Phones to 'Click'

A law is being considered in the US requiring all mobile phones that contain cameras (Read: most of them) to make a sound when a picture is being taken. The user would be prohibited from using any means to disable or silence the tone. It's unclear how older mobile phones, in which the noise can be disabled, would be handled.

Of course law enforcement, the secret service, Homeland Security field agents, and other paramilitary acting on behalf of the federal government will be exempted from the law.

I'm sure there will be a loophole for devices being used in the interest of law enforcement and national security.

I'd really love to see the government give actual consideration to what should be illegal in the use of modern technology - do we want it to be illegal to take photos of private situations without permission? - rather than a knee-jerk attempt to straightjacket technology in general in a way that won't fix any problems. Considering how easily the iPhone has been hacked in a lot of different ways, I can't imagine any but the lowest-end, most-locked-down phones will offer an unhackable camera noise. So people that turned off their picture noise to do unethical things will easily continue to do so, while the vast multitude have to deal with an obnoxious artifact for no particular reason.

It's a lot like DRM.
