BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Holes give edge to new MoD armour

University of Cambridge researchers have developed a better armour by cutting holes in traditional armour. According to the designer, one shouldn't think of the perforations as holes but as edges. It turns out that the holes are better able to deflect projectiles, resulting in double the ballistic performance while cutting weight in half.

There's a fantasy anthology called Villains, edited by Mary Gentle and Roz Kaveney, which featured a story called "The Strongest Armour." The armour in question had a great many mouths (of murdered children, if I recall correctly) all over it that would grip/bite any sword or projectile striking the armour. That was what this idea immediately reminded me of.

I've heard of fiction predicting truth, but until now I wouldn't have considered "The Strongest Armour" in that category.

An interesting connection. Is this a recent anthology? I suspect I've seen it on chapters with a set of other anthologies, some of which I picked up. With the move and all, the books are now spread all over the apartment so I'm not sure if we picked that anthology up or not.
