'I was saved by my angels,' says Saint John woman watching Scarface

A Saint John, NB woman narrowly missed taking one of four bullets that passed through her house. Several points in this story bear mentioning: First, Saint John is not really known for drive-by shootings, but it was the third house hit by bullets that day. Second, by odd coincidence she was watching Scarface at the time her house. Third, she claims that she was saved not by quick reflexes and luck but by real angels linked to the collection of decorative angels with which she has filled her living room.

globeandmail.com: 911 leaves North in cold

An interesting and though-provoking article by the Globe and Mail in which it reports that cellphone companies have collected millions of dollars in fees to support 911 services from customers in areas like the far North, like Yellowknife, where 911 service is not offered. They report that more than $13 million(Can) is collected each month from across the country to support 911 services, but no more than 20% of that is used to fund 911 dispatch centres. The rest, according to the article, is classified by Industry Canada as "surplus". The report goes on to state that  these same wireless companies don't want to direct funds to upgrading Canada's 911 service so that it determine the location of the cell phone from which the 911 call is being placed, a project expected to cost more than $50 million(Can).

Moderate drinking can reduce risks of Alzheimer's dementia and cognitive decline

A review of post-1990 studies linking alcohol consumption to Alzheimers seems to show, more than half of the studies, that moderate alcohol consumption is linked to a reduced risk of dementia. Moderate consumption is defined as 1 drink or less per day for women and 1-2 drinks or less per day in men. On a related note, an Oxford study linked consumption of flavonoids found in wine, chocolate and tea with enhanced cognitive performance. Also, moderate consumption of wine is linked with elevated levels of omega3 fatty acids in the blood. It appears that moderate consumption of alcohol, preferably wine, if done responsibly, may have some health benefits.

MAKE: Blog: Prius as emergency generator

It appears there may be another good reason for going with a hybrid: having a gas generator on hand. John Sweeney of Harvard, Mass. used his Toyota Prius to run his refrigerator, freezer, lights, and television during the ice storm earlier this month. The vehicle switches on the engine every 30 minutes to maintain a charge in the battery so the car became, effectively, a mobile gas-powered generator.
