Movement of solar system through galactic plain spawns extinctions - Recent simulations of how the solar system moves through the galaxy shows that periods of increased collisions between Earth and space debris coincides with when the solar system passes through the galactic plane. This occurs every 30 to 40 millions years and coincides with events such as the mass extinction of the dinosaurs more than 65 million years ago. It might be useful to note that, according to Wikipedia, we are currently passing through the galactic plane.
