Cerebral Cortex mapped - A multi-national group has completed mapping the cerebral cortex, and in doing so have identified a central "hub" that appears to a key component how the hemispheres of the brain work.

Shrinking the Canadian household carbon footprint - Canadian researchers have been examining not only how to communicate more effectively to consumers how to reduce their carbon footprint, but have examined the effectiveness of various measures that were recommended. They concluded that "The major obstacles to reducing environmental impact were seen as financial cost and lack of time and knowledge to evaluate and implement environmental measures." As a side note, Canadian home owners can, for under $300, have an energy audit performed to obtain a list of recommended changes to reduce energy use, as well as the government grants available to assist them.

I'll have a red with that steak - Israeli scientists have determined that red wine does more than taste good with red meat; chemical compounds in the wine apparently counteract some of the harmful substances released when the meat is digested. If you needed a good reason for choosing a good red to go with your steak, this is it.

Make cassava a meal in itself - Scientists have developed a method for fortifying Cassava so that it can provide a day's worth of nutrients in a single meal. They hope to use fortified Cassava to help the world's poor and malnourished, and have increased it's shelf life to ensure that it gets to them.

Sexual orientation based mostly on genetics and random environmental effects - so concludes one of the largest international studies of twins ever performed. Rather than there being a "gay gene", sexual orientation emerges from a complex interplay of genetic predisposition and environmental factors, making it impossible to pine down what, exactly, leads a person to swing the way they do.
