Online spreadsheet and word processor
Oct. 13th, 2006 10:05 pmMicrosoft takes another shot across the bow from Google

Both require creating an account, but it appears the word processor feature is designed to facilitate group document creation. An online chat feature even allows the co-authors to discuss changes in realtime, and the system supports DOC, XLS, CSV, ODS, ODF, PDF, RTF and HTML formats
Edit#1: There is a limit to the browers and versions supported. Currently it is telling me that I need at least version 2.0.4 in Safari... except that I am running that version. A deeper investigation reveals that Safari is not on the list of supported web browsers. The following ARE supported
IE 6.0+ (Windows)
Firefox 1.07, 1.5.0.6+ (Mac & Windows -- except for 1.0.8 on Windows and Mac, and 1.5b1 on Mac)
Mozilla 1.7.12+
Netscape 7.2, 8.0
Apparently you can append the http://docs.google.com/ url with &browserok=true to bypass the check but this does not appear to work.
Edit #2: Javascript and cookies MUST be enabled for this system to work.
Edit #3: There is the question of how you can log out once you have logged in but the browser check has indicated your browser fails. There appears to be no way to do so, at least none that I have found.
Edit #4: Apparently the "incorrect version" error I see is generated by Safari, not Google. They do not, in fact, support Safari at all. A check through their help group seems to indicate significant "teething" issues as they work the bugs out of the system (it is Beta, after all)
