Tech: Beamed sonic advertisement

Holosonics has introduced a novel way to annoy you from a distance with advertising, while making you appear deranged to those around you. The speakers, mounted seven stories above the street, are able to focus sound such that it is heard only by people within the beam.  The technology had previously been used in museums so that patrons could obtain information about what they are observing without disturbing the quiet of those around them.

The museum - and library - applications would be good; advertising? TURN IT OFF! Can you imagine the effect it would have on a schizophrenic or someone unstable who "suddenly started hearing voices"!!! [shudder]

The article mentions the idea of a "Do Not Beam" list, like the "Do Not Call" list for telemarketers. In a sci-fi story I'm reviewing for a friend, he posited wearing a button which identified you as someone not to have advertisements beamed at.

For the rest of us, there are earplugs.
