Wow, whoever wrote that has completely failed at being in touch with star trek - TV, animated series, novels, etc - nothing is in keeping with previously described language or context (For example, the trial of a child is not gender based, it's called Kas Wan - bet I've forgotten the spelling - and while there are two or more variants of how it went, both are walks through the desert solo, with a set distance to travel, and some approach it as a race... and Spock moves to help someone he doesn't like (saving their life against the rules of the trial) instead of finishing the distance. Thus gaining intellectual majority.
The cat/lizard combo of the Vulcan forge is Le-matya, not... whatever it was called here. Almost every novel involving Vulcan and at least one episode on TV (animated series) address it by name.
*shudders*
I'm hoping the movie will be good, but it would be nice to have some context that was actually context.
I... might be a bit of a trek nut from my childhood.
I liked the original series and the early movies (pre-save-the-whales), even followed ST:TNG and ST:DS9, but never read the books (except Spock's World) and never paid too much attention to the continuity. I'll take your word for it that the writers appeared to know very little about what was canon so re-invented what had already been established.
